Teachers Union
The teachers union is one of the largest. The union has a lot of cash and can mount some serious campaigns that they are for. For example, a few years ago, Utah tried to create a vouchers program so that people could take their tax dollars and choose the school of their choice. The idea was that bad schools would go away and that good schools would be rewarded with more students. In addition, the whole concept of education would be more flexible and tailored to an individual student.
The teachers union saw the new legislation as a threat and spent a lot of money on television and other media ads to defeat the legislation. What happened is that the legislation didn't pass. Now, parents are forced to take their child to the school in the boundaries in which they live unless given special permission. Private and other schools are not a priority unless funded by your own money (no tax money to help you).
